It rained for two days straight. Sammy called Kelly several times so she could hear the thunder. Kelly provided up-to-date information on her quest to get pregnant—so far she wasn’t. Cass talked to Kelly, too. Sammy thought it would be good for Cass to hear firsthand her friend’s pregnancy dilemma. Sammy felt awkward that she didn’t personally know how either situation felt. She only knew how it felt to be in dire need of a man to actually want to sleep with first, let alone have babies with.

Sammy and Cass spent the two rainy days in the cabin being lazy and self-indulgent. They ate loads of junk food, painted their nails several times, played with each other’s makeup, and all around acted like teenage sisters. They talked about everything from money investments, about which neither had much to say, to general gossip, about which they both had tons to say.

Cass told Sammy how she adored Jake. She wanted Sammy to pursue him full-speed-ahead after all the sisters left. But Sammy just laughed. She didn’t know how to pursue someone, let alone at full speed.

Then they talked about Foxy Vince and placed bets on how soon Alex would hook up with him. Alex was due to arrive that week, and they were both getting excited to see her.

Dana stopped by several times and participated in the much-needed girl time. She even supplied them with most of the junk food they requested from town that first rainy day. She loved talking about Hollywood and plied Cass with questions. Cass patiently answered each one.

Truth be told, Sammy knew that Cass loved having such an adoring audience. She loved recapping the story of her early days in Hollywood, meeting Phillip and all the early excitement. Dana was particularly interested in hearing about Sammy and John Harper dating. Dana told the girls that Jake mentioned this information very vaguely to her, and when she questioned him about it, he acted irritated. Both Cass and Sammy were pleased to hear that it bothered him enough that he told Dana.

At the end of those two rainy days, Sammy and Cass were content. They were well rested and completely in tune to each other’s lives. They didn’t talk much about the baby or Sammy’s lack of inspiration after that first rainy morning conversation. It was better to focus on the fun, interesting stuff. They knew there would be plenty of time in the future to talk about their worries.

Several times Sammy was tempted to tell Cass about her novel. But she refrained; the timing wasn’t right anyway. The novel was her happy news. She needed to share it with Cass when she was happy, too. It had to wait.

At the end of the two days, the clouds cleared just before sunset. It was a cold, crisp night and the sky was so clear the stars numbered in the thousands.

Sometime during the night, Sammy was awoken by Cass lightly shaking her arm.

“Sammy, wake up,” Cass whispered.

Sammy jumped, instantly awake and worried.
